The name of the municipality was thought to have come from the round shape of one of the hills in the area. People in the area would utter, "Anian nga nagbukel" (Ilocano, "How round it is. ").
Nagbukel Cave is a Philippine cave found in a dome-shaped mountain in the municipality of Diffun in the province of Quirino, Cagayan Valley. There is an excellent view of the surrounding area and Santiago City from the top of the mountain. The cave is a popular site for trekking, spelunking, and picnicking during the holidays. It is also popular with religious pilgrims, who visit the site during Holy Week in the Philippines. The cave is currently being developed by a religious sect called the Lamplighter.
